WWE Superstar Sami Zayn had a night to forget at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, Rhode Island, where the latest episode of SmackDown emanated this week. A longtime darling of the fans, Zayn has seen his popularity dwindling in recent months, and this week was especially humiliating for the Canadian star.
Sami Zayn has been longtime friends with the reigning Undisputed WWE Champion, Cody Rhodes. However, just like his fan popularity, even his friendship, which once seemed strong, appears to be showing major cracks. Zayn and Rhodes have had some tensions lately, and the former wanted to clear the air with The American Nightmare and called him out to the ring on SmackDown.
Thanks for the submission!
What followed was a passionate promo segment between the old friends where the champion put things into perspective for Sami. Not liking what he’d heard, he slapped Cody, who returned the favor in equal measure. A teary-eyed Zayn was seen leaving the ring when he got into a squabble with the fans in attendance, who mocked the star.
Zayn could be seen turning away with a disappointed expression and also pushed away the camera on his way backstage.
You can check out his reaction in the video below:
Sami Zayn has long dreamed of a world championship reign in WWE, something which has eluded him thus far. Maybe this could be his chance to finally climb to the top of the mountain in the Stamford-based promotion.
Sami Zayn to be special guest referee for Undisputed WWE Title match on SmackDown
The latest edition of WWE SmackDown didn’t end on a sour note for Sami Zayn after all.
The number-one contender for the Undisputed Championship, Gunther, let SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis know he had chosen Zayn to be the special guest referee for his title match against Cody Rhodes on the blue brand next week.
Although Rhodes didn’t appear too pleased with the decision when it was relayed to him, Zayn appeared to be excited at the prospect of calling the title bout, with The American Nightmare’s fate now in his hands.
