YouTube Expands AI Topics in Live Streams, Super Chat Likes

YouTube’s provided more info on its test of AI-generated live chat summaries, while it’s also expanding access to its illuminated subscription button, triggered by mentions in videos, as well as Super Chat likes in live streams.

First off, YouTube has shared more insight into its expansion of AI chat summaries to live streams, which it first announced back in June. YouTube began testing AI chat summaries on regular videos last year, and now, live streams will also get the same.

YouTube Live Chat Summaries

As explained by YouTube:

“With AI generated live chat summaries, you’ll see a banner display at the top of the live chat when you join a live stream that has sufficient chat activity prior to you joining. These chat summaries are created from published chats, which means that they won’t use text that’s held for review, containing blocked words, or was sent by blocked users.”

The idea is that this will help users get a feel for the key discussion points, and a more streamlined way to access the relevant chat elements. And while its AI summaries are not perfect, YouTube sees this as an opportunity to enhance interaction within streams.

YouTube’s also testing a new highlight on the “Join” button for channel memberships whenever the creator mentions phrases like “join my channel” or similar.

As you can see in this example, the “Join” button is highlighted with an animated color ring, emphasizing their in-video call to action.

The process uses audio/text recognition to trigger the display, which YouTube’s hoping will be a simple way to boost sign-ups. The option has been in limited testing for some time, but is now coming to more channels

Finally, YouTube is also rolling out its expanded engagement options for Super Chats:

“A few months ago, we experimented with a reply button, as well as the ability to like Super Chats, which offered viewers more meaningful ways to interact with the chat community and feel more connected during a live stream. We saw positive results from the experiment, so we’re happy to announce that we’ve launched these features to all creators who have Super Chat turned on.”

For context, YouTube’s Super Chat, available in live-streams and Premieres, enable any viewer to purchase an animated “Super Sticker”, which is then highlighted with a different background color in the stream.

YouTube began testing Super Chat likes back in January, which provides more ways for viewers to interact, and to help highlight certain Super Chat messages to creators. And now, more live-streamers will get access to the option, which could be another way to enhance live interactions.

YouTube continues to roll out tweaks and updates to enhance engagement, and give channels more ways to drive subscriptions. These latest tools are not major, but could be helpful in your process.
