Team India opener Abhishek Sharma‘s struggles at the T20 World Cup 2026 continued as he perished cheaply yet again in the ongoing Super 8 match against South Africa. India were set a target of 188 runs in Ahmedabad.
Abhishek Sharma walked out to open the batting with Ishan Kishan. While he finally managed to get off the mark, he could not stay out in the middle for long. On the third ball of the fifth over, the left-hander tried to take on Marco Jansen. It was a knuckle ball that he failed to read and was through with his shot early.
It went high in the air as Corbin Bosch took a brilliant running catch to dismiss the opener. He ran to his right from mid-wicket. Keshav Maharaj also ran in from mid-on and the two fielders almost collided. Fortunately for South Africa, Bosch managed to hold on to the catch eventually.
Abishek Sharma had to walk back for 15 runs off 12 balls. His innings looked promising with two boundaries and a six at a strike rate of 125.

His dismissal left India in huge trouble at 26/3 inside five overs while chasing a challenging total.
Abhishek Sharma finally manages to score in the T20 World Cup 2026
While his early dismissal was not ideal for India, Abhishek Sharma finally managing to score his first runs in the T20 World Cup 2026 came as a huge relief nonetheless.
The opener has been struggling to get off the mark, registering three successive ducks in the group stage. His scores against the USA, Pakistan, and the Netherlands were 0(1), 0(4), and 0(3).
Abhishek Sharma had a phenomenal 2025 and even impressed in the home T20I series against New Zealand before the marquee tournament. However, he has failed ot translate the performances in the T20 World Cup 2026 so far.
While India sailed through the group stages with relative ease, they will desperately need Abhishek to find his form back and start firing at the top for them to continue doing well in the Super 8s.
