Dallas Wings superstar Paige Bueckers was in a very good mood on Saturday after Alanna Smith joined the team in free agency. Smith reportedly signed a three-year max contract to join the Wings, providing defensive versatility to an offense-oriented roster.
In a post on her Instagram stories, Bueckers shared a compilation of Smith’s reels from social media, saying, “Hello” with her Australian accent. The Wings guard, who was on vacation, jumped into the pool and shouted with joy as she couldn’t believe what was happening.
“I can’t believe this is my life,” Bueckers said. “Smiling through it all. We was in the trenches. We here!”
In addition to Alanna Smith, the Dallas Wings already signed Jessica Shepard and brought back Arike Ogunbowale. The Wings also have the first pick in this year’s WNBA Draft, so they have plenty of options to choose from, including Paige Bueckers’ girlfriend, Azzi Fudd.
Other predicted No. 1 picks are Spain’s Awa Fam, UCLA’s Lauren Betts and TCU’s Olivia Miles.
Paige Bueckers on not having a successful rookie season as a team
It was a tough first year in the WNBA for Paige Bueckers. The Dallas Wings were tied for the worst record in the league, though she was playing like a superstar from the get-go.
Bueckers averaged 19.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game en route to winning the 2025 WNBA Rookie of the Year.
Speaking to SELF, Bueckers discussed what it was like to lose so many games for the first time in her life.
“It was tough because I had to deal with not having a successful winning season and being a part of a rebuild,” Bueckers said. “It doesn’t happen overnight. I’ve learned to not be result-driven and still be consistent and disciplined in who I am regardless of the results. I just have an unconditional joy and gratitude to show up with the same mentality and the same attitude, whether we have a winning season or a losing season.”
The Wings have an opportunity to be a better team this upcoming season. They have a new coach in Jose Fernandez, and general manager Curt Miller has done a wonderful job in free agency.
Alanna Smith and Jessica Shepard helped the Minnesota Lynx reach the WNBA Finals in 2024 and have the best record in the league in 2025. They are expected to have big roles this season due to their respective contracts.
