Sorana Cirstea vs Jelena Ostapenko preview

26th seed Sorana Cirstea will face former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open 2026.
Following a first-round bye, Cirstea scored an easy 6-2, 6-0 win against Tatjana Maria in the second round. She rallied from a set down to upset World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the third round. She was up against 13th seed Linda Noskova in the fourth round.
Cirstea quickly built a 4-0 lead in the opening set, and remained on the front foot until the end to claim the set. While she squandered her initial break advantage in the second set, she regrouped with a three-game run towards the end to score a 6-2, 6-4 win.
Ostapenko kicked off her run in Rome with a crushing 6-0, 6-1 win against Lucrezia Stefanini. She staged a comeback in her next two matches, overturning a one-set deficit to move past Elena-Gabriela Ruse and Zheng Qinwen. She took on 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya in the fourth round.
Ostapenko dished out a breadstick to capture the first set with ease. She continued to run circles around Kalinskaya in the second set as well, breaking the Russian’s serve twice to wrap up an easy 6-1, 6-2 victory.

Sorana Cirstea vs Jelena Ostapenko prediction

Cirstea might be rethinking her decision to retire at the end of the season considering her results this year. She has a 24-7 record, with a 9-2 record on clay. She has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open for the first time, bringing her current record in Rome to 8-7.
Ostapenko had tumbled down the rankings in recent weeks. However, she has ensured that she will be seeded at the French Open with her quarterfinal run here. She’s no stranger to making a deep run at the Italian Open, progressing to the last eight for the fifth time. She has a 19-10 record here, and a 6-3 record on clay this year.
Cirstea has won three of her last four matches against Ostapenko. The latter won their only showdown on clay, coincidentally at the Italian Open in 2023. While the peak Ostapenko experience could easily overwhelm Cirstea, one cannot surely bet on the Latvian being too consistent round after round, or even within a match. The Romanian usually plays with more margin compared to Ostapenko, which should enable her to continue her last hurrah.
Pick: Sorana Cirstea to win in three sets.
