“His downfall has been insane”: NFL followers react as Jets launch Younghoe Koo 1 week after signing kicker

In a surprising move, the New York Jets have decided to release veteran kicker Younghoe Koo only a short time after adding him to the roster.

Koo joined New York on a one-year contract toward the end of May, and many fans saw him as a potentially valuable addition because of his experience and previous success, including a Pro Bowl selection and an NFL-best 37 made field goals in 2020.

Despite that reputation, reports from OTAs suggested he had difficulties during practice sessions, which likely contributed to the team’s decision to move in another direction.

Here’s a look at some of the reactions from fans on X after news broke that New York had moved on from the veteran kicker less than a week after signing him.

“Imagine not being good enough for the jets,” one fan said.

“Already? They just signed him 6 days ago,” another fan commented.

“That younghoe ain’t koo no more,” one person joked.

“He didn’t even get his foot in the door yet,” one fan said.

“Must’ve finally reviewed the footage of his season with the Giants,” one fan said.

“His downfall has been insane to watch. Once a kicker gets those ghost it’s over with,” one person added.

Born in South Korea, Koo relocated to the U.S. as a teenager and worked his way into the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2017. His professional career began with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Following his departure from the Chargers, Koo revived his career with the Atlanta Legends of the Alliance of American Football in 2018. That performance helped him return to the NFL, where he joined the Atlanta Falcons the following year.

Koo enjoyed the most successful season of his career in 2020, earning a Pro Bowl selection after making an NFL-best 37 field goals on 39 attempts. He also converted 33 extra points that season.

After spending several years with the Falcons, Koo moved on in 2025 and later appeared for the New York Giants before signing briefly with the Jets.

The Jets have reportedly signed Jason Sanders to replace Younghoe Koo

With Younghoe Koo no longer on the roster, the New York Jets are reportedly turning to veteran kicker Jason Sanders as his replacement.

Sanders hit the open market on Tuesday after the New York Giants decided to move on from him. Before joining New York, he spent eight seasons with the Miami Dolphins and built a strong track record as a reliable special teams contributor.

Over the course of his career with Miami, Sanders made more than 84 percent of his field-goal attempts.

There are still questions surrounding Sanders, however, as he has not played in an NFL game since 2024. A hip injury forced him to spend the entire 2025 season on injured reserve.

That said, Sanders should enter camp on relatively equal footing with Cade York. While York has had a head start with the Jets, he also lacks recent meaningful playing experience. The team’s willingness to bring in competition indicates that coach Aaron Glenn is still evaluating his options at kicker heading into the season.
