Top WWE star opens up about early frustrations and unusual backstage orders from Vince McMahon

A WWE Superstar recently reflected on the strange creative direction he received from Vince McMahon upon his main roster call-up. The star is popular among fans and competes on the Monday Night Show.

When LA Knight was brought up to the main roster from NXT in 2022, Vince McMahon was hesitant to push him as a singles star because of his age (he was 39 at the time). Instead of letting him use his natural, high-energy charisma that later made him a massive star, the former WWE Chairman repackaged him as Max Dupri, the leader of a modeling faction called the Maximum Male Models.

In a recent interview on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, The Megastar opened up about the bizarre instructions he received directly from Vince McMahon.

McMahon ordered LA Knight to completely strip away his established promo style -the booming voice, the quick pacing, and the signature catchphrases.

“Vince [McMahon] told me before, ‘You gotta talk soft, I don’t want you to say or do any of the things that you used to do, none of that, whatever.’ If I’m honest, though, he wasn’t familiar with any of it. He didn’t know LA Knight. I think he was told a little bit,” Knight said.

The former WWE United States Champion added that Vince McMahon wanted him to speak in a quiet, hushed tone, even when performing out in front of a live arena audience.

“That first day of introducing the models, and we’re doing the little rehearsal thing, talk-through. And he comes down, and he’s like, ‘I need you to talk softer.’ And I’m like, okay, well, I’m thinking like, you had me talking soft in the backstage, but like now I’m doing a presentation. I need to be a little bigger, right? To present to the people. But it’s his show. Sure. And he goes, ‘Just read me a line from there as softly as you can.’ He’s like, ‘I don’t think you can be effeminate, but try and be effeminate without being effeminate.’ What?”

After Vince McMahon retired and Triple H took over the bookings, he allowed the Max Dupri character to be dropped and gave Knight his name and persona back, paving the way for his massive surge in popularity.

LA Knight shares honest thoughts on potential WWE Hall of Fame induction

Speaking during the same interview, The Megastar reflected on his career and the impact he has made since arriving in WWE.

He said he doesn’t plan to compete in his 50s but said he would be open to returning for a Hall of Fame induction.

“If they decide at some point they get crazy enough to go, we’re going to put him in the Hall of Fame, sure, I’ll come back and do that. But I got a feeling that probably ain’t gonna happen either,” he said.

During the May 25 episode of WWE RAW, LA Knight declared his entry for the 2026 King of the Ring tournament. It will be interesting to see what’s next for him.
