Unleash the Avatar, the action RPG/souls-like title from Indian studio Aeos Games, has finally released a brand-new in-engine trailer for the game. Surprisingly enough, the game seems to be shaping up quite well, with gameplay that looks significantly more polished and some new additions to the combat system that are bound to grab the attention of souls-like fans.
Apart from the graphical polish, the gameplay trailer also surprised fans with voice acting by none other than Johnny Yong Bosch, who is best known for characters like Ichigo (Bleach) and Nero (Devil May Cry 5).
With that said, here are 5 key takeaways from Unleash the Avatar’s new gameplay trailer.
5 major takeaways from the new gameplay trailer of Unleash the Avatar
5) Improved visuals and clarity
The trailer is centered around the gameplay improvements and the setting of Unleash the Avatar. However, the first thing that’s apparent from the new trailer is the improvements made to the game’s visuals compared to the past showcases. Although the game uses Unreal Engine 5.1, it isn’t going for the usual photorealistic visuals.
Instead, the game employs a unique art style that’s very reminiscent of games from the Xbox 360-era.
Additionally, the visuals also seem to offer more clarity, which was one of the pain points when the game was first showcased by Aeos Games. While yes, there are particle effects, it seems to have been optimized in order to offer a more clearer visual feedback to the player, which is a necessity for a game that markets itself as a souls-like.
4) Cinematic boss fights

Speaking about souls-likes, the trailer starts with a very cinematic boss fight complete with multiple phases. Furthermore, later in the trailer, Aeos Games also gave players a glimpse at other bosses from the game. And every boss fight seems to feature a cinematic edge, akin to games like Devil May Cry or the more apparent inspiration, Black Myth Wukong.
3) Counter-based combat system

Combat is another major point of improvement in the latest gameplay trailer for Unleash the Avatar. The combat system still heavily relies on parries and counterattacks. However, the openings for said counterattacks seem to be much more obvious with better and more readable animations. That said, it’s not as polished as games like Lies of P or Black Myth Wukong.
However, it does look much more responsive than before, with better animation work.
2) A grounded story with a mythological twist

It’s obvious that Aeos Games is taking heavy inspiration from Black Myth Wukong. However, it does differ from Game Science’s ARPG in one key aspect: the storytelling. Unlike Black Myth Wukong, Unleash the Avatar features a more grounded story that eventually delves into the more fantastical elements of Hindu mythology.
It certainly makes for a very unique setting for a soulslike ARPG since we don’t often get more grounded storytelling in games of this genre.
1) Johnny Yong Bosch as Vikram

Lastly, and perhaps the most important new revelation about Unleash the Avatar is its voice cast, in particular for the game’s protagonist, Vikram. In Unleash the Avatar, Vikram is voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch. For those who are unfamiliar with Bosch’s work, he voiced iconic characters like Ichigo (Bleach anime) and Nero (Devil May Cry 5), among many others.
