Mount St. Mary’s University in Maryland requires students to take a theology course that teaches the New Testament through a lens of ‘racial justice.’
The left cannot meet a subject like this on its own terms. It must be changed to fit their worldview. It’s the same reason why James Talarico in Texas only talks about his faith in order to justify left wing political policies.
The left knows that they can’t win on the subject of Christianity, so their only real choice is to try to twist it to their views. And note the fact that this course is required, because leftist ideas are so popular that they have to be made mandatory.

Required Mount St. Mary’s theology course teaches New Testament through ‘racial justice’ lens
Students at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, are required to complete a theology course that assigns a book interpreting the New Testament through themes including “racial justice,” “antiracist allyship,” and “cultural assimilation.”
The university’s course catalog mandates all theology majors must complete Made in God’s Image, a theology course examining Catholic Social Teaching through contemporary issues including racism, restorative justice, health care, technology, and war. Students satisfy the requirement by enrolling in one of the approved course sections.
One summer 2026 section taught by theology professor Dr. Love L. Sechrest requires students to read her book, Race and Rhyme: Rereading the New Testament.
In the book, Sechrest examines New Testament passages involving what she describes as “intergroup conflict, ethnoracial tension, and power dynamics between dominant and minoritized groups.” She writes that her interpretation draws in part from her perspective as a “Black woman scholar.”
Rather than focusing solely on traditional biblical interpretation, Sechrest develops what she calls “associative hermeneutics,” using New Testament passages to explore modern concepts including “racial justice,” “antiracist allyship,” “cultural assimilation,” “gendered stereotypes,” and coalition-building among different identity groups.
A review published by The Christian Century states that Sechrest’s interpretive framework incorporates insights from Critical Race Theory alongside “womanist sensibilities.”
Imagine being a parent and thinking that you can spare your child of wokeness by sending them to a Catholic school and they end up being required to take this course.
A reckoning is coming for higher education and they have earned it.
