The Indiana Fever’s 90-86 road win over the Chicago Sky turned controversial after officials ejected DiJonai Carrington for forceful contact with Sophie Cunningham’s head and neck.
Carrington took things to the next level by posting “WHITE PRIVILEGE” on Threads directly from the locker room before Saturday’s game even ended. However, her frustration over the officiating didn’t sit well with the sports community, especially Emmanuel Acho.
The former NFL linebacker slammed the Sky guard on his “Speakeasy” podcast for losing her cool over a call that was clearly backed by the rulebook.
“It was not a race-based decision,” Acho said. “And to call that a white privilege-based foul is to completely undermine the term ‘white privilege’ and to also completely ignore the rules in basketball. You hit her in the head. You drew blood. You didn’t connect with the ball at all whatsoever. So to me, it was just very ignorant and, to some degree, asinine by D.J. Carrington to suggest that that call was based on white privilege.”
Acho also challenged DiJonai Carrington’s premise on a factual level, adding:
“Have we seen examples of white players make that same foul and get away with it? Have we seen examples of Black players make that same foul and get away with it? Yes. There was no white privilege involved in that specific call.”
It was all good until Cunningham shoved Carrington back following the hard foul. Even though Cunningham retaliated, the officials chose not to penalize the Fever guard. Instead, they reviewed the Sky guard’s action, upgrading her foul from a Flagrant 1 to a Flagrant 2, which triggered an automatic ejection. Carrington clearly lost her cool after that decision.
However, this wasn’t an isolated incident, as Carrington has a rocky history with the Fever. Her infamous eye-poke on Caitlin Clark during the 2024 playoffs still makes the rounds online. But there is no denying that this controversy has brought Carrington significant attention across the sports community.
Cari Champion raises question about DiJonai Carrington’s future
Veteran sports media figure Cari Champion recently raised a completely different angle regarding the controversy. She referred to Sophie Cunningham’s meteoric rise in public visibility as directly tied to her physical “enforcer” role on the court.
Turning the mirror on DiJonai Carrington, Champion asked on Threads:
“The question is a fair ask — will @dijonai be applauded? Will she gain millions of followers and marketing opportunities?”
Cunningham managed to turn her hard plays and off-court drama into her personal brand. Now, Carrington’s “WHITE PRIVILEGE” post from the locker room is viral beyond basketball. However, it’s still too early to tell if all this attention will help Carrington build her brand or ruin her chances at future endorsement deals.
