“That was his mommy” “Makes him look worse”: NFL followers react as Jayden Daniels breaks silence on sending cease-and-desist letter to LSU

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has broken his silence on the escalating dispute with LSU after the program reissued his No. 5 jersey. Ahead of the 2026 college football season, the Tigers handed the jersey to sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett based on a recruiting commitment.

In a measured social media statement on Thursday, Daniels emphasized his focus on the NFL while expressing hope that the matter can be handled privately between him and the school. Before Pickett’s allotment, the No. 5 jersey had not been worn since Daniels left for the NFL.

“I have been locked in on training camp, and that’s been my number one focus,” Daniels wrote. “I have a lot of gratitude for my time at LSU, and I’m proud of what my teammates and I accomplished there.

“Obviously there are issues to be worked out between my team and LSU and my hope is that it will get done privately. My sole personal focus is on Commanders’ football. I realize the business of football is unique and I trust this can all be resolved.”

The statement followed Wednesday’s reports that Jayden Daniels’ representative had sent LSU a cease-and-desist letter demanding the university stop using his NIL. A spokesperson for the quarterback also said the family felt “profoundly disrespected” and had believed the number would be protected as part of his legacy.

Daniels’ statement immediately ignited a series of reactions from NFL fans. A section of the fans believes his latest message is damage control after igniting a dispute with the school. Others feel the quarterback’s fight was spurred by his mother.

Here’s a look at some of the reactions:

@MySportsUpdate yeah that was definitely all his mommy 😂😂

@MySportsUpdate Yikes… this makes him look even worse.

@MySportsUpdate Translation: “My mom did this, I’m worried about football.”

@MySportsUpdate The only thing he’s accomplished is not make people want to buy any merch or anything associated with his petty ass, great job

@MySportsUpdate Bullshit ass damage control by a petty douchebag

Jayden Daniels advised to give up the jersey dispute

The dispute between Jayden Daniels and LSU regarding reissuing his No. 5 jersey escalated so fast following his cease-and-desist letter. However, on the “4th & South” podcast, former LSU running back Leonard Fournette advised the Commanders quarterback to give up the fight.

“Jayden, listen bro, just let it go,” Fournette said. “No player is bigger than the LSU brand. I’m gonna say this once again: before I got to LSU, Tyrann Mathieu and Patrick Peterson, number seven wasn’t worn for two years.

“I was the right recruit that wanted the number, and also I’m from the Seven Ward, so it represents my hood and my neighborhood where I’m from. And they gave it to me.”

Jayden Daniels had hoped LSU would maintain its stance of protecting the jersey number of its Heisman winners. With the Tigers coach Lane Kiffin standing with DJ Pickett to wear the No. 5 jersey, it remains to be seen how the issue is resolved between the quarterback and the school.
