Ian Machado Garry: “Don’t waste 10 seconds telling this guy you f****** love him”

Dana White made some big remarks on Ian Machado Garry’s UFC 330 game plan last weekend, and he did so again after the latest UFC event.

Garry lost the main event to Islam Makhachev and was unable to claim the welterweight title. However, the Irishman was in a strong position after the third round and could have won the fight if he had been more aggressive.

White pointed that out last weekend, and was asked by a reporter if he wanted Garry to “annihilate” Makhachev in the final round. White responded by claiming he wanted more from the Irishman:

“I didn’t say I would have liked him to do that. What I said was, you get this opportunity you worked your whole life to get there, and you come out in the fifth round, after you do all this great work.”

White then revealed that Makhachev’s game plan to hold Garry against the cage during the first round would cause major problems for the champion over five rounds.

He also added that Garry did great work, but wasn’t happy with the respect during the fight:

“And I thought that Ian did good work leading up to the fifth round, and I am assuming that was the game plan, and you want to come out and start hugging and shaking hands. Tell him how f****** great he is when they’re putting the belt on you.”

White continued:

“He might never have that opportunity again, and probably will never get the opportunity at Islam again, who is going to go down as one of the all-time greats if not the greatest by the time he is done.”

White also didn’t like Garry’s plan and wanted the Irishman to do more in the final round:

“You have five f****** minutes. Every second of that round counts. Don’t waste 10 seconds telling this guy you f****** love him.”

The UFC CEO was then asked if this was a mentality that could be taught, and he replied:

“You either have it, or you don’t, in my opinion or you made the mistake one time, and you won’t do it again.”

White, however, clarified he wasn’t taking shots at Garry, but was just unhappy with how the final round went:

“I’m not s******* on Ian. He’s a classy guy, one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. But be a f****** nice guy when the five minutes are up. You have five minutes to try to f****** finish one of the greatest of all time and have that belt wrapped around your waist. From then on, you can tell Islam you love him, and how great he is, shake his hand, hug him, take pictures with him, whatever you want to do. You have five f***** minutes to win.”
