Bill Belichick has begun his second season in college football with a major statement.
On Saturday, the former New England Patriots head coach steered the UNC Tar Heels to a 15-10 win over the TCU Horned Frogs at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. The season-opening triumph marked a reversal of last year’s 14-48 loss, which also occurred in Week 1.

The Tar Heels were led on offense by running backs Benjamin Hall and Jaylen McGill, who combined for 69 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Jelani Thurman was the game’s leading receiver, grabbing four of quarterback Billy Edwards Jr.’s 16 completions for 94 yards.
On defense, edge rushers Xavier Lewis and Melkart Abou-Jaoude combined for three sacks, and Derek McDonald had nine tackles.
For the Horned Frogs, Jeremy Payne rushed 25 times for 142 yards, while Jon Denman had a rushing touchdown. However, the team was practically undone by this safety by punter John Hoyet Chance late in the second quarter:

Bill Belichick reflects on defeating TCU for first-ever season-opener win in college football
Bill Belichick has won many Week 1 games throughout his storied coaching career, but Saturday marked an important milestone: it was his first-ever triumph in a college football season-opener.
During his post-game press conference, he said:
“It was a great team win for us. I can’t say enough about the efforts of everybody. … TCU is a good football team, and they certainly did some things that were difficult for us, but I thought our players responded well and tried to step up to the challenge.”
He continued:
“I’m just happy for the players. They’ve worked really hard. To have positive results back up that hard work, reinforces it. I think they’ve been believing in what we’re doing, but I think this just gives everybody a little bit more belief and we’ve just got to keep building.”
The Tar Heels next host the East Tennessee State Buccaneers on September 12 after a one-week break. Kickoff is at 12 p.m. ET.
