The Springfield Thunderbirds tipped their tricorn hats to the United States’ 250th anniversary with special edition jerseys worn over the weekend.
The Massachusetts-based American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL‘s St. Louis Blues donned the commemorative jerseys on Saturday, April 11, in a 3-1 loss to the Hartford Wolf Pack. They were chock-full of early American and Revolutionary War imagery to celebrate America’s semiquincentennial.
The centerpiece of the jersey is the reworked version of the Thunderbirds’ primary logo on the front of the navy blue base. Parts of the logo that are normally gold were recolored silver, and the bird sported a traditional tricorn hat. The hat included a red feather and a small thunderbolt symbol.

Silver, blue and red stripes ran around each sleeve, with the player’s number in a red blackletter font with a silver outline on the blue middle stripe. The collar was solid silver, and only a narrow silver stripe appeared on the hem. In an unconventional move, the sock stripes did not match the sleeves; instead, the socks were royal blue at the top and navy blue at the bottom, separated by a narrow silver stripe with silver stars overtop.
The navy blue insert at the front of the collar included a red feather quill and a silver thunderbolt. The red quill also appeared in front of a silver blackletter S on the right shoulder. The left shoulder featured a royal blue roundel with red outlines and 13 stars inside. “1776” is written out in a blackletter font in the middle.

On the back of the jersey, the number was same style as on the sleeves, set in a red blackletter font with a silver outline. The player name was also set in a blackletter font, in navy blue on a silver contrasting nameplate. The motto “Stand Your Ground” was printed inside the collar.
Springfield, Massachusetts, played a big role in the Revolutionary War, as it was the site of the U.S. National Armory when it opened in 1777. The site was chosen because Springfield was central to important cities and resources, had access to the Connecticut River and major roadways, and was far enough upstream that it was sheltered from almost all attacks by sea. The Armory stored muskets, cannons and other weapons, and also produced paper cartridges.
The Thunderbirds have three games left in their 2025-26 AHL regular season: one against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms and a home-and-home series against the Wolf Pack. They currently sit in sixth place in the Atlantic Division, which is the last playoff spot in the division.
