Attention makes a donkey suppose he is a lion

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has appeared to mock Bruno Fernandes, who accused him of lying. The footballer-turned-pundit shared a cryptic image after Fernandes’ comments in a podcast with Steven Bartlett.

Responding to Keane misinterpreting his quotes after the win over Nottingham Forest, Fernandes accused the former Manchester United captain of lying. The Portugal midfielder insisted that he was open to accepting criticism but stated that Keane went over the top by twisting his words.

Fernandes said on ‘The Diary of a CEO’ podcast:

“To be honest, I’ve always said I don’t mind criticism. I always take criticism from anyone and everyone and I never replied to anything whatsoever. People have an opinion, they think it’s good, bad or whatever.

“What I don’t like was when people lie about things and in this case that you said about Roy Keane, basically what he said is a lie. And luckily for me, everything is on record. Imagine if it wasn’t? Then people will think like, ‘Bruno is the guy who always trying to get the assist [record].”

In the wake of the response from Fernandes, Keane took to Instagram and shared a cryptic message. It appeared to be a dig at the Manchester United skipper and read:

“Too much attention makes a donkey think he’s a lion.”

Fernandes has been the major driving force behind Manchester United qualifying for the Champions League. He set a Premier League record for most assists in a season (21) on the final day of the 2025/26 campaign.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes reveals why Tottenham transfer failed despite him being interested

Fernandes, 31, also revealed that he was very close to joining Tottenham before the transfer to Old Trafford. He opened up on how the agreement was almost done for him to go to Spurs before Sporting decided against letting him leave.

The Manchester United skipper admitted that he was happy to join Tottenham at the time because it was his dream to play in the Premier League. However, looking back on it, he also feels lucky that it didn’t work out, which helped him join Manchester United.

Fernandes stated:

“Yeah, I spoke with Tottenham, and we were very close to getting an agreement done. Then, in the last two days of the market, Sporting just said, ‘We’re not going to sell him. We’re going to keep him because we need him’.

“Obviously, I was lucky enough that my dream club to play in England was Man United, and obviously, Tottenham at the time was the option I had, and I was very, very happy to join them because they showed me the process that they were going through.”

Fernandes, who joined the Red Devils in January 2020 for a deal worth around £67 million, has found the back of the net 107 times, while setting up goals for his teammates on 108 occasions at the club.
