Deputy sheriff of Maricopa County, AZ, appointed to guide division for remainder of 2024

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors on Thursday appointed Deputy Sheriff Russ Skinner to function interim sheriff for the remainder of the 12 months.

Skinner was one among three finalists for the place. Voters will select the subsequent full-term sheriff in November’s basic election.

Paul Penzone resigned final month after seven years as sheriff in Arizona’s most populous county, overseeing an company of about 3,500 workers in metro Phoenix.

The 56-year-old Penzone, a former Phoenix police officer, defeated longtime incumbent Joe Arpaio and was elected sheriff in 2016. Penzone was credited with ending a few of Arpaio’s insurance policies, which have been extensively criticized as anti-immigrant and racist.

Penzone had one 12 months left on his second time period and left to take a job exterior of legislation enforcement.

Candidates for the interim place have been required by state legislation to stay within the metro Phoenix county and be from the identical registered political celebration as Penzone, who’s a Democrat.
