The Waldstadion an der Kaiserlinde prepares to host perhaps its biggest game yet as Bundesliga newcomers Elversberg welcome champions Bayern Munich to southwestern Germany. In one of the early twists of the campaign, the small Saarland-based hosts arrive on Sunday having picked up more points (six) than the record champions (four).
Hailing from a town of approximately 13,000 inhabitants, Elversberg is the smallest town ever to be represented in the German top flight, but they have immediately begun punching well above their weight.

Elversberg’s first-ever Bundesliga game saw them edge Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 at home, racing to an incredible three-goal lead before holding on to survive a late onslaught from their much stronger visitors.
Following that display of resilience on the opening day, Schwarz und Weiß produced another show of character on matchday two as they beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-3 on the road, coming back from a two-goal deficit to claim maximum points at Borussia-Park.
Bayern Munich, meanwhile, began their title defense with a straightforward 5-1 thrashing of Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena, with four different players getting on the scoresheet for the Bavarians.
A similar outcome was expected from Vincent Kompany’s men when they travelled to Gelsenkirchen to take on newly promoted Schalke 04 on matchday two. However, Bayern were uncharacteristically wasteful and came away from the VELTINS-Arena with just one point after being held to a goalless draw.
Back at home during the week, Bayern’s difficulties in front of goal looked set to continue after they failed to make their dominance count in the first half of their UEFA Champions League clash with Bodø/Glimt. However, the Bavarians found their shooting boots in the second period and came away with a typically emphatic 5-0 victory.
