Enough psychological stress to cry

Andy Roddick has offered strong words of advice to Iga Swiatek regarding her 2026 season. Swiatek recently shared her decision to conclude her season early, but prior to that announcement, Roddick voiced his candid thoughts on what the Pole should do as her WTA Finals qualification chances hung in the balance.

Swiatek was recently in action at the Wuhan Open, where she broke down in tears during her semifinal clash against compatriot Maja Chwalinska after a thigh injury severely hampered her ability to compete.

Despite the injury, the former World No. 1 brought up her chances of qualifying for the WTA Finals during her post-match exchange with Chwalinska. Swiatek was also scheduled to compete at the Ningbo Open, as she looked to clinch the final spot in the year-end championships.

Given that Swiatek appeared determined to qualify for the WTA Finals, Andy Roddick described it as a “shortsighted” approach during the latest episode of his “Served” podcast, especially after the 25-year-old’s tearful exit in Wuhan.

“If there’s a leg injury and there is enough mental stress to cry your way through a loss in Wuhan I don’t know that I give a sh*t about making Tour Finals if I’m Iga. And if I’m on her team I don’t know that I can deal in being shortsighted,” Roddick said.

Highlighting Iga Swiatek’s status as a six-time Grand Slam champion, Roddick argued that her primary focus should be on preparing herself mentally and physically to win another Major next year. He asserted that it would be a “mistake” for the Pole to prioritize the WTA Finals instead.

“If you go and play on a leg that wasn’t feeling well two days earlier in say the dead times of the year, but if you’re a six-time Slam winner, the most unimportant parts of the year. If you’re a six-time Slam winner, you deal in wins and losses and slams and No. 1 rankings. Your focus and your priority is not am I 10? Am I No. 8?” he said.

“It’s getting ready so that you can ramp up and try to win a Slam next year. What I’m saying is if she shows up and plays this event, and if her priority is making world Tour Finals and not getting healthy ready, mentally and physically for Australia, I think that’s personally a mistake from the cheap seats,” he added.

Andy Roddick’s advice was evidently not off the mark, as Iga Swiatek came to the same conclusion and made the decision to end her 2026 season. In a heartfelt Instagram post, the Pole expressed pride in the progress she made over the course of the demanding year.

“This has been one of the most demanding seasons of my career, with a lot of challenges, changes and lessons along the way. I’m especially proud of the work we’ve done in the second half of the year and the progress that came with it. It gives me a lot of confidence in what’s ahead,” Iga Swiatek wrote.

The 25-year-old acknowledged the need to focus on rest and recovery instead of taking part in more tournaments this season before thanking her fans for their support.

“The past few months, or actually the past couple of years, have been incredibly intense and I feel I need to rest and recover my body fully. So that’s exactly what I will do, a bit longer this time. 😉 I’ve decided to end my season here, which means I won’t be playing any more tournaments this year,” she posted.

“I’m feeling grateful for everything this year has taught me and very much loving what I do. As always, I’ll come back with passion and motivation to keep improving. 💪🏻😊 Thank you for being with me and see you soon 🤍,” she added.

Iga Swiatek has finished the year with one tour-level title under her belt, having clinched the WTA 1000 trophy at the Canadian Open. The six-time Grand Slam champion also played an instrumental role in leading Team Poland to victory at the United Cup at the beginning of the year.
