Jon Anik: “Awful. Not about you, bro!”

Din Thomas’ comments after UFC 330 left several shocked. The former UFC fighter, who now works as an analyst for the promotion and a coach for other athletes, decided to stop doing corner work after Gillian Robertson’s loss.

Robertson was fighting for the women’s strawweight title in the co-main of UFC 330. However, she was dominated by Mackenzie Dern, and Thomas, during a live segment for Paramount, confirmed his decision to step down:

“For my announcement, I do have an announcement for you guys. I told myself I would continue to do this until I took Gillian as far as she could go. I think that might be as far as she can go, and I am officially retiring from cornering fighters tonight.”

This came as a shock to the panelists, and Thomas went on to share why he was not going to continue:

“It’s just, I told myself that I would do this with her, I would see her journey out, and take her as far as I think she can go. And this might be as far as she can go.”

Thomas also spoke about co-hosting the Deep Waters podcast, which features several former UFC fighters such as Dustin Poirier, Chris Weidman and Jorge Masvidal.

This message from Thomas was slammed online due to the timing and how self-centred the former UFC star was.

UFC commentator Jon Anik also reacted to the statement online and wasn’t pleased with Thomas’ decision to do this on air:

“Wow. Awful. Not about you, bro! Wow.”

Some fans misunderstood Anik’s comments on the matter, and berated him for siding with Thomas. However, the commentator clarified that he was not defending the UFC analyst’s decision after the fight:

“I agree with you. I’m not sure if you think I’m defending him or what.”

@Landingzone19 @WillHarrisAOAF I agree with you. I’m not sure if you think I’m defending him or what.

This was Robertson’s first UFC title fight, and she seemed out of sorts for most of the clash. Dern made light work of her rival to retain her belt.

Thomas suggesting that this was the limit for Robertson also came as a surprise. The Canadian was on a five-fight win streak before UFC 330, and still has a few years left in her career.
