Minecraft has revealed new Ice Caves coming in the 2026 Winter game drop. This will be a brand new biome, bringing new blocks, mobs, and environments to the game. The underground biome system will arrive in the fourth and last game drop of this year, right around November or December.

In Minecraft Live September 2026, Mojang Studios revealed the first few features of the next Winter game drop. In this update, the developers are planning to breathe new life into cold biomes by adding a new Ice Caves biome.
This region will only rarely generate underneath the cold biomes and will feature new blocks and mobs. Since the new region will generate under cold biomes, it will be challenging for players to survive down there.
First, let’s talk about the new block coming to the Ice Cave biome: Ice Crystals. These are new blocks that will generate in the new upcoming biome and will generate both vertically and horizontally, similar to amethyst crystals in geodes.
These need to be carefully mined and obtained, after which they can be used for various decorative purposes. These new crystal blocks can also be used as a light source. In fact, they will be the primary source of light in the new biome.

Next is the dangerous part of the new cave biome: The Frozen Zombie. This mob will spawn naturally in the Ice Caves and will essentially be a cold variant of a regular zombie. It will be able to apply a stacking freezing effect with its melee attacks.
If players take enough hits from a Frozen Zombie, they will freeze and won’t be able to move. Another distinct feature this zombie variant has is that it can also throw ice balls, which are more dangerous than regular snowballs. The ice balls apply knockback and deal significant damage.
Normal zombies can also convert into Frozen variants when exposed to powder snow. This means that these new variants can spawn in cold biomes if they fall into powder snow blocks.
Another dangerous part is that if players place torches right underneath the Icicles, they will melt and fall, damaging and killing them.
All this will be coming to the Winter game drop in Minecraft Java and Bedrock in the coming months.
