Legendary faculty soccer coach Nick Saban dished on what contributed to his resolution to retire as the final of the Alabama soccer program after years of dominance.
Alabama’s 2023 season began rocky with a 34-24 loss to Texas in Week 2. However the staff managed to win the remainder of the day, together with on a miracle landing from Jalen Milroe in opposition to Auburn. Alabama then topped Georgia within the SEC Championship to make the School Soccer Playoff.

“I want to be clear that wasn’t the reason, but some of those events certainly contributed,” he advised ESPN of his resolution to retire from the game. “I was really disappointed in the way that the players acted after the game. You gotta win with class. You gotta lose with class.
“We had our alternatives to win the sport and we did not do it, after which exhibiting your a– and being pissed off and throwing helmets and doing that stuff… that is not who we’re and what we have promoted in our program.”

Saban said he believed his messaging wasn’t coming across. He said players were asking for “assurances” they were definitely going to play and “how a lot are you going to pay me?” Saban said the program was intended to build for the players’ futures and possible NFL career.
“So I am saying to myself, ‘Perhaps this does not work anymore, that the objectives and aspirations are simply totally different and that it is all about how a lot cash can I make as a school participant?’” Saban added.
“I am not saying that is unhealthy. I am not saying it is improper, I am simply saying that is by no means been what we had been all about, and it isn’t why we had success by means of the years.”
Saban’s departure sent shock waves through college football. He finished his college football career with seven national championships – six at Alabama and one with LSU.

Kalen DeBoer was hired to replace Saban. He spent the last two seasons at Washington. The Huskies lost to Michigan in the national championship.
