Serena Williams made her return to the singles event at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, where she faced Australia’s Maya Joint. The 20-year-old saw off the American tennis player 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3. Williams was then slated to compete in the doubles event with her sister. However, an injury that she picked up during her singles round forced her to withdraw from the team event.

At the Cincinnati Open and US Open, Williams only competed in the doubles event. In an interview with Good Morning America, Williams stated that she is looking forward to compete in the singles event in the upcoming tournaments, once her leg recovers fully.

“I probably will play again,” she said. “I have to…After some of those returns, I think I need to play at least once. I injured myself at Wimbledon. And I just didn’t have time to recover, unfortunately. And I just didn’t want to take any opportunities away from someone in terms of getting a wild card if I wasn’t able to compete in a way that I knew I could.”

Williams’ doubles run with her sister Venus at the US Open came to an end following their defeat to Joint and Hao-Ching Chan in the first round.
