The Los Angeles Sparks fired coach Lynne Roberts after they failed to make the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season. On Friday, ESPN’s senior writer Ramona Shelburne reported the news on X.
According to Shelburne, the Sparks dismissed Roberts on Friday morning. An X account shared the news, flooding the comments section.
“Stephanie White’s time is up too!!” one fan said.
“They should’ve fired her mid game in the fourth quarter,” another fan said.
“Should’ve fired her on the spot for the tech that potentially cost them the game last night,” another fan commented.

Roberts was hired in November 2024 after LA had failed to make the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. Her arrival was met with hope but ended in disappointment. Not much changed under Roberts, as the Purple and Gold finished ninth in the standings last season with a 21-23 record.
This season has been worse. LA lost 76-75 to the Golden State Valkyries in their final game of the season. They finished 10th in the standings with a 16-28 record. Roberts had a 37-51 record with LA in two seasons.
LA Sparks bid a heartfelt farewell to Nneka Ogwumike as she closes out a 15-year WNBA career
Nneka Ogwumike hung up her sneakers after the Sparks played their final game of the 2026 season. The 11-time All-Star got emotional during her retirement speech after the game.
“It’s such a privilege and an honor to be in this league, to be a woman in sports, and especially to wear the Sparks jersey.” (Timestamp:4:18)
Fans applauded the former MVP as she delivered her retirement speech. LA recognized Ogwumike’s contribution to the franchise and women’s basketball before her speech. They announced that their new training facility for current and future Purple and Gold players will bear her name and be called “Nneka Ogwumike Player Sanctuary.”
Ogwumike was one of the best players during her prime in the mid-2010s. She led the Sparks to a championship in 2016 and won the MVP award in the same season. She earned one All-WNBA first team and seven All-WNBA second team nods in her 15-year-long career. She finished with 17 points, 15 rebounds and five assists in her final WNBA game.
