Fourth seed Tommy Paul will square off against Benjamin Bonzi in the second round of the Lyon Open 2026.

Paul has put together a pretty decent season so far. He made the fourth round of the Australian Open and the US Open, and reached the third round of the other two Majors. He has made three Masters 1000 quarterfinals so far, at the Miami Open, the Cincinnati Open, and the Shanghai Masters.

Paul won his only title of the season in Houston, his very first title on clay. He also reached the finals in Hamburg and Queen’s Club. As one of the top four seeds in Lyon, he received a bye into the second round.

Following a third-round exit from the US Open, Bonzi opted to compete at the Challenger level. It didn’t work out the way he intended to as he won only one match across two tournaments. He returned to compete on the ATP Tour at the Lyon Open, where he faced Cameron Norrie in the first round.

Bonzi put himself in the driver’s seat thanks to an early break of serve in the first set, and eventually captured the set. He struggled to make a breakthrough in the second set. It was Norrie who gained the upper hand in the end, bagging the last three games of the set to level the match.

Bonzi jumped to a 3-0 lead in the third set, only for Norrie to claw his way back into the match. However, the Frenchman secured another break of serve in the eighth game, and served out the match in the next game to score a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win.

Bonzi has struggled to get going this year. His win over Norrie was just his 10th at the ATP level, against nine losses. He has tallied seven of his 10 wins on hardcourts.

Bonzi has struggled against Paul, and has lost all three of his prior meetings against him in straight sets. Additionally, his 0-4 record against top 20 players this season doesn’t bode well for his chances of beating Paul for the first time.
