Islam Makhachev continued his incredible winning run in the UFC and picked up his 17th straight win. The Russian beat Anderson Silva’s long-standing record of most wins in the promotion, but it didn’t come easy.
Ian Machado Garry put up a great fight after the first two rounds at UFC 330. The Irishman landed several blows on the welterweight champion, and Makhachev brought up how difficult the fight was while speaking to the Paramount+ desk.
Makhachev’s face was a little messed up, and he pointed that out when asked if the fight was tougher than he expected:
“It’s very hard fight. Look my face, my nose.”

Makhachev also thought he had broken his nose in the fourth round; however, he came out unscathed about that injury:
“End of the fourth round, when I make him slam, he gave me crazy headbutt to my nose and I feel my nose broke or something, but doctor check says good, nothing problem.”
While the fight wasn’t as easy as many expected, Makhachev still saw some positives from the tough battle:
“A very hard fight, but the hard fight gave me good improve. I improve a lot from this fight also and what this fight meaning for, from the first second to the last second, I will fight. No matter how it’s gonna go but I will fight.”

The Russian is now 29-1 in his MMA career, and this win was his first welterweight title defense. Makhachev is a two-division UFC champion and never lost the lightweight title before moving up.
His only loss came at UFC 192 to Adriano Martins, which took place in 2015. Makhachev has since dominated most of his rivals and is in the conversation for being the MMA GOAT.
